You can blame corporate America

AppleInsider | Apple to impose 802.11n unlocking fee on Intel Mac owners

I’m no SarOx expert or anything.  In fact, I only know the most basic things about the law.  But this is absolute crap.  And if Apple has to charge a nominal fee, why $5?  Why not $1?  So ridiculous.  I blame Enron, WorldCom, etc. for all those problems which led to Sarbannes-Oxley.

We all know it was in dispute for a long time

Active gaming burns more calories, coordination still a concern – Joystiq

But the research has been done!  Being active, even if playing video games, burns more calories that being inactive, even if playing video games!  Scientific texts will have to be rewritten!  New curriculum created to start teaching these REVOLUTIONARY new findings!

I have no idea how this works

AllFreeCalls.net | End The Rip-Off: Make Free Calls from The USA

Free international calls to various countries.

Here’s a blurb from TechCrunch on how it works:

Here’s my understanding of how this works: the founder created his own telephone company in Iowa. Iowa is apparently the only state taking advantage of an FCC kickback scheme that gives telco’s a portion of the fees generated from every inbound call to an Iowa number. So when you call the AllFreeCalls phone number, a portion of any long distance fees you are paying go to the company. The kickback is apparently authorized via the Universal Service Fund. These kickbacks are enough on average to more than cover the international outbound calling fees.

I don’t make many (any really) international calls, but my family/friends do. Should be worth a shot. And theoretically since you are calling Iowa and they are placing the call for you, you should be able to dial internationally on your celly without an international plan (and avoid the CRAZY fees that go along with international calls, plan or not).

edit:  See comment by Garren below for an slightly more in-depth explanation.  I will admit to wanting to try it out though…

Yeah all of Asia laughs

In Japan, barely a ripple – Los Angeles Times

Well not all of Asia, but most definitely Japan and South Korea.  Even the iPhone is lackluster to them.  Though despite all they can do with their phones, I’d imagine even they would have to admit that the touch interface (multi-touch) is pretty damn cool.  And of course in Japan and SK they don’t care that their phones are thick.  They don’t have the RAZR induced slim wars over there.

If Wii throwing didn’t prove the idiocy of America, maybe this will

Federal Way schools restrict Gore film

“Condoms don’t belong in school, and neither does Al Gore. He’s not a schoolteacher,” said Frosty Hardison, a parent of seven who also said that he believes the Earth is 14,000 years old. “The information that’s being presented is a very cockeyed view of what the truth is. … The Bible says that in the end times everything will burn up, but that perspective isn’t in the DVD.”

People are allowed to believe what they want.  Some people want to interpret the Bible literally (to which I say they don’t because there are hundreds of draconian rules in Leviticus that they surely don’t follow), which is completely asinine.  How can anyone possibly believe the Earth is a mere 14000 years old?  In the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary?!?!

School Board members adopted a three-point policy that says teachers who want to show the movie must ensure that a “credible, legitimate opposing view will be presented,” that they must get the OK of the principal and the superintendent, and that any teachers who have shown the film must now present an “opposing view.”

The requirement to represent another side follows district policy to represent both sides of a controversial issue, board President Ed Barney said.

“What is purported in this movie is, ‘This is what is happening. Period. That is fact,’ ” Barney said.

No no, Mr. Barney.  Technically it is all just a theory.  But it is one with overwhelming evidence supporting it.  Al Gore just isn’t pulling it out of his ass when he says that it’s a virtual scientific consensus.  The scientists who oppose this view are either (a) hired by special interest groups funded by oil companies or (b) not necessarily skeptical of the theory, but wary of sweeping proclamations (that many proponents of global warming make with a lot of ease and not a lot of support).

And the measures a teacher has to go through to present ANY material: multiple levels of approval (to the SUPERINTENDENT?!?!?!) is completely ridiculous!

Oh the death knell

Oh if this is true it’s a BAD move for Sony

Adult movie company says Sony won’t let XXX titles on bluray discs….

edit: I just read that Bluray is going to have transferable content (e.g. movie disc comes with a portable version for ipod, psp, etc.).  That would ameliorate some of this idiocy.  Also, I just read that Sony pulled the same shit with Betamax, and we all know how that worked out for them….. grrrr.
