genetic testing to determing ethnic heritage

this is an nytimes.com article (reg required) about how ppl are using genetic testing to find out their ethnic background. the story part of the article is about 2 guys who took the test and found they are 9% native american and 11% northern african. but they have always thought of themselves as white. their parents are white. and i know that white american males are the “easiest group to discriminate” against, but don’t they have enough of an advantage within the social order that they shouldn’t be allowed to do this sort of thing to get things like financial aid to colleges and such?

another reason to detest rich ppl

producer sacrifices for his art

So the producer of an Eddie Griffin (oh yeah, that’s a sure return on investment) movie is offering up his cars to be in the movie (an automobile thriller). cars include a phantom, lambo murci, enzo, and a p-car carrera GT. the p-car will BE CRASHED DURING ONE SEQUENCE!!!

he’s offering up his GT to be wrecked! ugh.

CNN.com – ‘Brokeback’ screening lands prison officer in hot water – Apr 8, 2006

CNN.com – ‘Brokeback’ screening lands prison officer in hot water – Apr 8, 2006

okay, so here’s the summary intro paragraph/sentence from this article:

A Massachusetts correctional officer is being disciplined for showing the gay cowboy movie “Brokeback Mountain” to inmates at the state’s largest prison because his boss determined that the film includes content inappropriate for a prison setting.

this is from a reuters wire article. reuters is a news organization like the AP (though mostly a secondary/international source in the US). Here’s my problem with it. it’s all fun and games for comedians, late-night talk show hosts, etc etc etc to make the almost obligatory brokeback mountain jokes. to stereotype it as the “gay cowboy movie” when it’s not a gay cowboy movie. but to put the term “gay cowboy movie” in the lead of the article, that goes around the world?!?! that just propagates the whole problem. gives legitimacy to it, when it shouldn’t be.

Simmons on women

ESPN.com: Bill Simmons movie review: Fever Pitch

first let me say, i love bill simmons. roughly 97% of what he writes i enjoy immensely. he’s currently in the final stages of his intern contest (which i did not try out for), which is neither here nor there. i’m linking to this because it’s so hilarious. the different reactions to the same movie (men vs women). how horrified he is to be identified with a generic male lead in a romantic comedy. the insights on women (that’s right, i said it, insights). so funny. you read the conversation he had with his wife and mother about the movie and you can hear it, because you’ve been part of that talk in one context or another at some point in your life. good stuff all around. his page is definitely a worthwhile read.

love of all things 80s?

The New York Times – The New Peacocks

from the nytimes new thursday style section. yes men’s clothing (not just tailored) has really taken off in the past few years. which means everything costs more, etc. but this article talks at least a little about the move toward big business and the corporate world etc.

But ultimately the timing of the suit’s return suggests a social shift, toward a climate of conservatism obviously, but also to a culture of money and business

but doesn’t it kind of seem like a return to the 80s in general. things more fitted, more preppy (for lack of a better term), more self-centered, more about wealth and displays of wealth (fake or not). not that i mind, seeing as how i’ve always considered myself to be somewhat of a dapper man. and yes, i love suits with real button holes (even though now “low end” suits even have this bc it’s something that ppl at least used to equate with high quality and cost), colored (though custom colored is a bit much for me) or unique jacket linings (i also love something i saw on a thom brown suit once, which is colored lining under the collar. yes no one will ever see it, but still), but i dont know if i’d enjoy a return to the 80s, or the attitude of the 80s at least.

such goodness

Arrested Development’s back

this is great news. admittedly i was late to the AD fan club, but now i’m a decided member. but i do feel a lot of people still “like” this show because they “should” like it. i mean if as many people actually liked it as they say they do, wouldn’t the ratings be much better? btw, i think it’s great they got picked up for a full, standard 22 eps next season, but honestly, don’t you think fox should’ve given them 26 if they wanted? to make up for cutting this season from 22 to 18….

keypress test

jebus, look at that. 1 of 20 “basic” QC test is depressing the keys of the cellphone 400000 times! the “demands of popular SMS messaging” indeed! isn’t siemens trying to sell their cell phone division or get out of the business altogether? maybe they should, you know, stop spending so much money on stuff like this.

btw, they should just hire that guy who did the record number of SMSs in a month (guy had like a 1400+ page bill, i wonder how many envelopes that took?).
